Born Again?

3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Born Again?

The human heart cannot understand. Can a man enter into his mother’s womb a second time and be born again? Our reason asks the absurd. Of course we cannot do that. Jesus wants Nicodemus and us to understand the birth from above. Jesus makes clear the necessity of his work to and for each sinner. He is the Lord that gave us life, and he is the Lord that saves that life from sin and death by washing us with his Word and command. He puts his name on his own and makes them members of his own body. He bids you and I come into his Kingdom. We are not worthy to do so, but he makes us righteous. He claims us as his own and applies the work of his cross to us. He chooses to call it a birth and a new life. He makes us new in our Baptism as he gives us the birth from above.
