A Simple, Yet Sacred Life

22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John had not yet been put in prison).

A Simple, Yet Sacred Life
John tells us that after speaking with Nicodemus, Jesus and His disciples went into the Judean countryside. There, they spent time together and baptized. What a striking picture of our Lord’s earthly ministry: humble, close to creation, and delighting in fellowship. This was a simple, almost pastoral scene, yet it carried eternal significance. Christ’s work, even in the quiet moments, always aimed toward the cross. Baptism itself points to His death and resurrection, by which He cleansed us from sin and gave us new birth. In the same way, our ordinary days are not empty or unspiritual. Christ sanctifies the common places of our lives. Under the shadow of His cross, even our daily labors and relationships become arenas of His mercy. Rejoice, then, in the simple gifts of God, time with others, water, bread, and His Word, all pointing to the One who died and rose for you.
