Knowing the One Who Sent Him

19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

Knowing the One Who Sent Him
Jesus’ hearers in this passage asked where He came from, seeking to understand His authority. They focused on outward knowledge, heritage, location, or visible credentials, but Jesus pointed beyond the earthly to the divine: He came from the Father. His origin is not merely a matter of earthly geography; it is a revelation of His eternal relationship with God. We, too, often seek signs or proofs in the world, but true understanding comes only through faith in Christ. The cross reminds us of this: there, God’s eternal Son humbled Himself, taking on human flesh, suffering, and death for our sin. In the cross, Jesus’ origin and mission are fully revealed, sent by the Father to rescue us. Faith clings to Him, not worldly knowledge, trusting that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
