He Knows the Heart

18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
John 13:18-20

He Knows the Heart
Jesus speaks these words in the shadow of betrayal. He knows that one of His own will lift his heel against Him. This fulfills Scripture, not as a tragic accident, but as part of God’s saving plan. Christ is not caught off guard. He is not powerless. He goes willingly to the cross. Here is comfort for the Church: Jesus knows the hearts of sinners, yet still He comes to save. He knows Judas’ plotting, Peter’s denial, and our own failures, and still He sets His face toward Golgotha. The cross is not a reaction to sin, but God’s eternal answer to it. When Jesus says, “Whoever receives the one I send receives Me,” He ties His saving work to His Word and Sacraments. Here the crucified and risen Lord still comes to His Church, betrayals, doubts, and sins fully known, yet grace abounds, because Christ has borne it all.
