These Three Testify

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

These Three Testify
God on the cross interrupted their preparations for the Passover. The soldiers were instructed to break the legs of the prisoners in order to hasten their death. However, Jesus is already dead. It is finished. To prove it, the soldier pierces his body with a spear. Water and blood come pouring out. The Son of Man is put into the deep sleep of death and out come the things that make for his bride, the Church: water for Baptism and blood for the Supper. The Holy Spirit will put the Word of God with Water and he will put the Word of God with bread and wine and Jesus with his grace and truth will dwell with his people. He dwells with you in Word proclaimed and Sacraments given. He dies on the cross in order to gain a bride. He dies and rises again to live with that beautiful bride forever. You are that beautiful bride. You live, forgiven and free, with Jesus forever. The Spirit and the water and the blood testify of these things.
