What Have I Done?

4 “You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord:
When men fall, do they not rise again?
If one turns away, does he not return?
5 Why then has this people turned away
in perpetual backsliding?
They hold fast to deceit;
they refuse to return.
6 I have paid attention and listened,
but they have not spoken rightly;
no man relents of his evil,
saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turns to his own course,
like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
7 Even the stork in the heavens
knows her times,
and the turtledove, swallow, and crane
keep the time of their coming,
but my people know not
the rules of the Lord.

Jeremiah 8:4-7

What Have I Done?
It takes an intervention. God has to stop the perpetual backsliding. Our sinful hearts have no desire to stop. Our old Adam runs away from God. Like Jonah, we run for our own Nineveh. God sends his Holy Spirit to interrupt our voyage. He calls you with the good news that Jesus has died and rose again. He enlightens you by creating a clean heart and renewing a right spirit in you. This is the God that cares for you by rescuing you from the eternal flames of hell. This is the God that becomes One with you by taking on human flesh and suffering and dying for you. This is the God that rises victorious over death and the grave to live with you. This is Jesus who delights to be with you and to have you as his own. He stops the backsliding and the sin and the rebellion and walks with you in the Way.
