Men of Strife
10 Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me. 11 The Lord said, “Have I not set you free for their good? Have I not pleaded for you before the enemy in the time of trouble and in the time of distress? 12 Can one break iron, iron from the north, and bronze? 13 “Your wealth and your treasures I will give as spoil, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory. 14 I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.”

Men of Strife
Our sin has caused great strife. We have rebelled against our God and have run in the opposite direction from his Word and his ways. We have despised his gifts and rejected his works among us. This has caused great wrath to be kindled. God is angry and jealous. He demands payment for our sin. There can be no payment without the shedding of blood. So it is for the men of strife, the Man of Sorrows takes on human flesh that he might die for the whole world and bring an end to the wrath and anger of God. Indeed, Jesus’ cross has destroyed sin. His death has undone the chains of our slavery and given us freedom. Jesus’ resurrection has set us up in the love of God and has made us Children of God like him. Blood has been shed that you would not die. The devil has no claim on you. Your ways have been directed by Jesus. Amen.
