The Word They Cannot Silence
18 Then they said, “Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”

The Word They Cannot Silence
Jeremiah stands surrounded by voices that scheme to silence him. They trust their own wisdom, their priests, their prophets, anything but the Word of the Lord. The people reject Jeremiah not because he is unclear, but because he speaks God’s truth against their sin. The problem is not the messenger, but the message. So it is still. The sinful heart resists the Law that exposes and the Gospel that humbles. We would rather silence the Word than be slain and raised by it. Yet God’s Word cannot be destroyed. Even when rejected, it accomplishes His purpose. This rejection finds its fullest expression at the cross. There, they did not merely plot against a prophet, they crucified the Word made flesh. And yet, in that very act, Christ bore our rebellion and secured our forgiveness. The Word they tried to silence now proclaims life: your sins are forgiven in Christ.
