The Danger of Distrusting God's Providence
13 Now Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah 14 and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. 15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?” 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.”

The Danger of Distrusting God's Providence
Fear often tempts us to seize control rather than trust the Lord's promises. Johanan sincerely desired to protect the remnant of Judah from Ishmael's treachery, yet he proposed a secret act of violence that rested on suspicion rather than God's revealed Word. Gedaliah rejected the accusation, unwilling to condemn a man without certain evidence. In a land already scarred by bloodshed, the temptation to answer fear with more bloodshed remained strong. We know this temptation well. Anxiety whispers that God's ways are too slow and that our own plans are safer. Yet Christ bore the violence of sinful humanity on the cross, where evil seemed victorious but God's saving purpose was accomplished. There the Lord proved that His wisdom surpasses ours and His providence never fails. When fear clouds your judgment, flee not to desperate schemes but to the crucified and risen Savior. In Him your future rests securely, and His faithful care will never abandon you.
