Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
(Kneel)
Confession of Sins
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor miserable sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended you and justly deserve your punishment now and forever. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray you of your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being. Forgive me all of my sins and grant me the power of your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life.
Pronouncement of Forgiveness
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all of your sins in the Name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

(Intoned by Laetare with Congregation on Gloria Patri;
Psalm 78:1–3, 4b; antiphon: Psalm 35:3b; 34:17a, 6b; 48:14a)
Say to my soul, “I am your sal- | vation!”*

[The Lord] saved him out of all his | troubles;*
this is God, our God forever and | ever.
Give ear, O my people, to my | teaching;*
incline your ears to the words | of my mouth!
I will open my mouth in a | parable;*
I will utter dark sayings | from of old,
things that we have | heard and known,*
that our fathers have | told us.
We will tell the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, | and his might,*
and the wonders that | he has done.
Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*
and to the Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be- | ginning,*
is now, and will be forever. | Amen.
Say to my soul, “I am your sal- | vation!”*

(2 Timothy 4:22)
P Let us pray.

This Is The Day
Psalm 118:1, 5, 14, 24, adapt. By John A. Behnke (ASCAP)
Jubilate Choir
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. This is the day that the Lord has made.
O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His mercy endureth forevermore.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. This is the day that Lord has made.
I called upon the Lord in distress; I called upon the Lord in distress; He answered me, He answered me,
He answered me, He answered me and set me free.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. This is the day that the Lord has made. The Lord is my strength and my song; the Lord is my strength and my song and my salvation.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made, the Lord has made; this is the day the Lord has made. Rejoice!
Old Testament Lesson
Genesis 28:10–17
[10] Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. [11] And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. [12] And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! [13] And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. [14] Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. [15] Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” [16] Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” [17] And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
The vision of Jacob’s ladder was a
promise of God’s unfailing presence
in a time of uncertainty and fear.
Our God is always with us. His love
does not and cannot fail. Each of us
has been given the wondrous gift of
direct access to God in Christ. No
matter how difficult or confusing the
circumstances of our lives become,
God is always there for His people.
Wherever we find ourselves we may
rejoice with Jacob, “Surely the Lord
is in this place.”
Gradual
(Intoned by Laetare; Psalm 141:1–2)
O Lord, I call upon you; hasten | to me!*
Give ear to my voice when I | call to you!
Let my prayer be counted as incense be- | fore you,*
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening | sacrifice!
Epistle Reading
Ephesians 4:22–28
[22] Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, [23] and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, [24] and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. [25] Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. [26] Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, [27] and give no opportunity to the devil. [28] Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse
(John 6:68)
Faith in Christ is a life transforming
reality. We who have been born
again as sons and daughters of
Jesus have been liberated from
bondage to sin and self so that our
lives may reflect the loving care of
our Savior. The devil is constantly
trying to draw us back into bondage
but in Christ we can resist and win.
Holy Gospel
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 9th chapter.
Gospel Reading
St. Matthew 9:1–8
[1] Getting into a boat [Jesus] crossed over and came to his own city. [2] And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” [3] And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” [4] But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? [5] For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? [6] But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic— “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” [7] And he rose and went home. [8] When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
The forgiveness of sins and
deliverance from the curse of sin
is the essence of the ministry of
Jesus. Every word which Jesus
spoke and every miracle which He
performed was designed to point
to that message and to certify His
authority to carry out that great
task. The healing of the paralytic
in this text and Christ’s dispute
with the Bible Scholars before the
miracle indicates the manner in
which the two are connected. Our
trust is in a God whose power
cannot be restricted.
Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
Begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made,
Being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things were made;
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary
And was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried;
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures;
And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father;
And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead;
Whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord and Giver of Life,
Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son,
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
Who spake by the Prophets.
And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
And I look for the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the world to come. Amen.

Jesus Sinners Doth Receive
Text: Erdmann Neumeister; Tune: 1699, Darmstadt – “Meinen Jesum Lass’ Ich Nicht”; LSB #609 © 2006 CPH
5 Oh, how blest it is to know: Were as scarlet my transgression, It shall be as white as snow By Thy blood and bitter passion; For these words I now believe: Jesus sinners doth receive.
6 Now my conscience is at peace; From the Law I stand acquitted. Christ hath purchased my release And my ev’ry sin remitted. Naught remains my soul to grieve: Jesus sinners doth receive.
7 Jesus sinners doth receive; Also I have been forgiven; And when I this earth must leave, I shall find an open heaven. Dying, still to Him I cleave: Jesus sinners doth receive.

We All Believe in One True God

P What is The Apostles’ Creed – First Article?
C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
P What does this mean?
C I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.
P A lesson from St. John 3:16 –
C “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Intercessory Prayer
Preface
Worship Note: The sound of the Zimbelstern before the Sanctus announces the invitation that brings the realms of heaven and voices here on earth to sing the great hymn of praise to our Lord.
(2 Timothy 4:22)
(Colossians 3:1)
(Psalm 136)
P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:
Sanctus
(Isaiah 6:3; St. Matthew 21:9)
The Lord’s Prayer
(St. Matthew 6:9-13)
C Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; For thine is the kingdom And the power and the glory, Forever and ever. Amen
Words of Institution
(St. Matthew 26:26-28)
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Pax Domini
(St. John 20:19)
P The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C And also with you.

This do in remembrance of me; Till you come to my kingdom.
This is my blood, I shed it for you. Take and drink in remembrance of me.

Enter reverently, meditate quietly, worship sincerely, serve Christ faithfully.
It is our heartfelt prayer that all who worships here this day may encounter the love of our Savior. Accord-ing to His promise, He is here today reaching out to us in love through Word and Sacrament. If you are seeking a church home, we hope that you have found it here so that we may rejoice in serving the Lord together. If we can be of service to you or your family in any way please do not hesitate to ask.
LIFE THOUGHTS / PRAYER: Trinity 19 – The horror of abortion happening over 3,000 times each day in the U.S. should make Christians angry. The silence of the Church and the indifference of fellow congregational members should make Christians angry. But anger must not lead us to sin (Ephesians 4:26). Screaming and yelling and returning evil for evil is not the way of the body of Christ. The truth needs to be proclaimed but without “bitterness and wrath” (4:31). Prayer: O Lord God, intervene and redeem our people that we may behold and inhabit Your kingdom. Amen.
ATTENDANCE CARDS – MEMBERS (yellow) & VISITORS (blue), remember to fill out an attendance card listing all in attendance for your family. Please note any changes, otherwise you do not have to fill in the address information each week. It is appreciated if first-time visitors would include their address and phone number. Email and work numbers are helpful for inner-office needs. By filling out a card, your attendance and communing is recorded, and your comments are addressed. It is not necessary to indicate common or individual cup. Place cards in the offering plate or give to an usher on your way out. Thanks!
• The Cry-Room and the four row spans directly in front of it are reserved for parents with small children. Thank you.
• Hearing devices are available from the ushers if you need this assistance.
HOLY COMMUNION will be celebrated next on Reformation Sunday, October 25 at 9:30 AM. “Let a man examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.” 1 Corinthians 11:28
The Word of God teaches that the bread and wine of the Sacrament are the true Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. This precious gift of God’s grace is to be received in a sense of reverent awe after careful self-examination. The Bible defines that self-examination as a personal recognition of the real presence of Christ’s Body and Blood in the Sacrament, and a repentant acknowledgment of my own sinfulness recognizing my absolute dependence upon Christ as the only source of forgiveness for my sin. Scripture further instructs that our participation in Christ’s Body and Blood together is the most profound and powerful way for Christians to acknowledge their unity in the faith. That is to say, when we share in the Body and Blood of Jesus at this altar, we are thereby indicating our common commitment to all of the doctrines of God’s Word as they are taught in this congregation. Because of these Biblical convictions, we respectfully request that visitors, who wish to join us in receiving the Body and Blood of Christ and thereby identify with our confession of Bible truth, speak with one of our pastors before attending the Lord’s Supper.

Bible Class & Sunday School for all ages:
8:15 AM –
What is the Augsburg Confession? An article-by-article Bible study of the Augsburg Confession of 1530. A study to help Lutherans understand what it means to be Christian. (Pastor Cholak, Bible Class Room)
10:45 AM – Adults
Matthew: Verse by verse study of the 1st book of the New Testament. (Pastor Cholak, Bible Class Room)
Enduring Faith: This adult class looks at the lessons the children are learning, with an adult perspective. New members and parents of Sunday School children are encouraged to come. All are welcome. (Bill Prestwood, C102)
Lutheran Confessions: Our Lutheran Confessions were developed out of a genuine concern with false teachings obscuring the glory and merit of our Savior. These unconditional affirmations are as understandable and poignant today as when they were written. Learn their history and development, as well as their relevance in the daily life of a Christian. Through discussion, you will see how others are asking the same questions and how Scripture offers solid, reliable answers. (James Kriegel, C101)
Women’s Bible Study – Altogether Beautiful: A Study of the Song of Songs, by Heidi Goehmann (published by Concordia Publishing House). Walking through this study, you will learn how beautiful God sees you, but more important, you’ll learn to ground your identity in the one who makes you beautiful—Jesus Christ. (Sarah Baughman, Family Room, Church)
Applying Scripture to Current Events: This class for young adults will focus on today’s headlines and current events and discuss these topics in light of scripture and how the verses covered each week apply to everyday life. (Adam White, C106)
The Church Militant–God’s Work in History: Picking up from the history of the early Church, we continue the history of how God preserved His Word within the medieval Church and brought about the Reformation in the 16th century. Combining history and theology, we will explore the connections of the Church past and present. (Karl Baughman, Cafeteria)

C Amen.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
Begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made,
Being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things were made;
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary
And was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried;
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures;
And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father;
And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead;

When you SCAN the CODE to CONTRIBUTE to the Run/Walk for Life, YOU provide real help to more than 3,700 women each year through our Blue Blossom Pregnancy Centers, of whom 93.5% embrace LIFE for their babies! OSL’s goal is $40,000. You don’t have to run or walk to help.
RUN/WALK for LIFE 2026 is a 2 mile walk or a 5K fun-run to raise awareness for LIFE, Saturday, October 17, 8:00am-11am, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Memorial Park, 6622 Haskell, 77007. Crisis pregnancies have not ended, and abortions are still happening in Texas due to the widespread availability of the abortion pill. For nearly 25 years, Houston Coalition for Life together with our generous volunteers and supporters have stood on the front lines praying and working to end abortion while providing vulnerable women with free, life-affirming services that encourage and empower them to choose life for their preborn babies. Thanks for helping!
