Solace in Times of Trouble

"God sent me before you to preserve life."
Solace in Times of Trouble
It is our only solace in the greatest troubles to cast all care on the Lord, entrusting ourselves to His judgment and will, whether He disciplines us publicly or privately. Let matters take their course. Thank God that you have the Word and the promise. Strive with high courage for the ability to sustain and overcome every assault of Satan, of death, and of tyrants. Peter strongly commends that zeal for and faith in the Word when he says: “And we have the prophetic Word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts" (2 Peter 1:19). He bids us fix our eyes and keenness of mind on the Word alone, on Baptism, on the Lord's Supper, and on absolution, and to regard everything else as darkness. I do not understand, or care about, what is done in this world by the sons of this age; for they crucify me. I cannot escape or draw away that horrible mask which hides the face of God, but I must stay in darkness and in exceedingly dark mist until a new light shines forth. . .. For it is admirably stated by Paul that "God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13), that one may rejoice.
