Bitter Medicine

14          Why do we sit still?
                        Gather together; let us go into the fortified cities
and perish there,
                        for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish
and has given us poisoned water to drink,
because we have sinned against the Lord.
            15          We looked for peace, but no good came;
for a time of healing, but behold, terror.

Jeremiah 8:14-15

Bitter Medicine
Jeremiah speaks for a people who finally see the disaster their sin has brought. They gather in fear, waiting for help, but the help they expected never comes. Peace was promised by false prophets, yet the Lord allows judgment to expose the lie. Judah looked for healing while refusing the Lord’s call to repentance. We know that temptation too. We want comfort without confession, peace without repentance. Yet God sometimes lets the bitter taste of our sin remain so we stop trusting ourselves. The true healing Judah needed would come not through earthly rescue but through the cross of Christ. There the judgment we deserved fell on Him. When hope seems delayed, the cross teaches us where peace truly comes from: the crucified and risen Lord, who heals sinners with mercy instead of poison. Return to Him in repentance and receive His promised forgiveness.
