Flee to the Stronghold

6 Flee for safety, O people of Benjamin,
from the midst of Jerusalem!
                        Blow the trumpet in Tekoa,
and raise a signal on Beth-haccherem,
                        for disaster looms out of the north,
and great destruction.
            2           The lovely and delicately bred I will destroy,
the daughter of Zion.
            3           Shepherds with their flocks shall come against her;
they shall pitch their tents around her;
they shall pasture, each in his place.
            4           “Prepare war against her;
arise, and let us attack at noon!
                        Woe to us, for the day declines,
for the shadows of evening lengthen!
            5           Arise, and let us attack by night
and destroy her palaces!”

Flee to the Stronghold

Jeremiah’s urgent cry pictures a people lulled into danger, mistaking false peace for true security. The watchmen sound the alarm, yet the city hesitates. Sin dulls the ear; judgment gathers at the gate. God warns in mercy before He disciplines in righteousness. His call to flee is not cruelty but compassion. We know this pattern. Our hearts prefer reassuring lies to repentance. Yet the Lord exposes what destroys us so He may save us. The threatened city foreshadows a deeper rescue: Christ bearing judgment outside the walls. At the cross, the alarm of God’s Law meets the refuge of His Gospel. There the Lord Himself becomes our fortress. So we do not trust appearances or earthly strength. We heed His Word, repent, and run where He directs. In Christ crucified, the sinner finds safety, pardon, and peace that no enemy can overthrow.
