19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

We don't really want a king. We want to be our own king. We want to make the decisions and rule over the things in this world. However, we cannot rule rightly. We rebel against God and his Word. We sin and dwell in deep darkness. We need to be rescued. We need a Savior. We need someone to rule over us in grace and mercy. Jesus is that King. Jesus is the One that rules perfectly in grace and mercy for you. Pilate did not know how perfect his sign above the cross was. It could have had another addition--attested to by the wise men on Epiphany--this is the King of the Gentiles. He is your King and mine. He rules selflessly and perfectly. His reign is life and he has granted it to you in the full.
