Fishing

21 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Fishing
Many of the disciples were fishermen. Jesus calls Peter, Andrew, James, and John from their boats, "Follow me!" He bids them become fishers of men. Indeed, the Gospel is a net that they will cast. They will need Jesus to teach them. They have Jesus to lead them. The very Net itself is Jesus. The Word became flesh and dwells among us. He sets the stage. They caught nothing. No longer do they fish from boats to catch fish. Now the fishing is preaching. Now they catch men--alive. This is by Jesus power and his grace. His glory is his mercy. Jesus brings us to where we see our works cannot save. It is only with him that we have life.
