Hold Fast Your Integrity

Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Hold Fast Your Integrity
Often times it is those who are closest to us who can give the worst advise.  We trust them because we know them and have a relationship with them. Whether it be a spouse, parent, sibling, or close friend we rely on their advice. But because they are human and sinful, just as we are, they don’t always lead us in the right direction.  As was the case with Job’s wife.  “Curse God and die.” Some pretty lousy advice.  It is not hard to understand her lashing out.  Afterall she is suffering alongside Job with all of the loses.  She too just received news of her wealth and children being taken.  She sees Job in his physical state. Nonetheless, Job is steadfast in his trust in God.  He does not blame God for his current state, but simply puts things into perspective.  Up to this point Job was extremely blessed by God, both in wealth and health.  He had had more good days than bad.  And for most of us, we can say the same.  When you remember your past happiness and blessings, you should not have trouble bearing your current woes.  Hold fast to your integrity knowing it is God how sustains you throughout your life, in the good times and the bad.  It is Christ who gave His life for you so you could be reconciled to the Father. It is the Holy Spirit who sustains you in your faith given through Word and Sacraments. It is God who promises never to leave you nor forsake you, and that means even in the difficult times.
