The Watcher

If I sin, what do I do to you, you watcher of mankind? Why have you made me your mark? Why have I become a burden to you?
Job 7:20

The Watcher
Job seems to be channeling a dystopic 1984 view of God, with the Orwellian moniker Watcher of Mankind.  But is God our Big Brother, watching over everything, looking for cause to strike at us?  Job certainly seems to paint God in this likeness.  He asks, what does it matter that I sin, how does that hurt You? You are the creator of everything, yet what I do somehow affects You?  And the simple answer to this is that yes, what we do does in fact affect God, so much so, He sent His only Son to walk amongst us, to carry our burdens, and pay the price for our sins.  This is how much our rebellion and sins affected God. We were created in His image and then shattered it.  And it was Christ who gathered the pieces to Himself and restores them.  And on the last day that image of God will be fully restored in us.  It is Christ who does in fact watch over us, not to catch us in a sin so as to be able to meet out His divine justice, but to save us from that sin.  He stands witness against the devil who accuses us and demands God’s punishment for our transgressions. And with pierced hands and feet Christ shows that the punishment has be carried out, death was delivered, not to us, but to Him. Then He watches as the devil can say no more, for he has been defeated.  Our Good Shepherd watches over His flock.
