The Helpers of Rahab
“God will not turn back his anger; beneath him bowed the helpers of Rahab. How then can I answer him, choosing my words with him?

The Helpers of Rahab
Here Job speaks of God’s anger and wrath. He mentions how those who went against God were subdued and made to bow down. The helpers of Rahab does not refer to the Rahab of Joshua 2, but to an ancient Babylonian myth. Rahab was a great sea creature which was defeated and is used in the Bible to represent the enemies of God. Job fears God’s anger and believes himself too insignificant to approach Him. He sees his current sorrows as punishment form God and dares not question it, for fear of encouraging God’s wrath even further. Yet this is not what we are told to do. We are in fact to come to God in every trouble. We are to lay our troubles at the foot of the cross, where Jesus told us “It is finished.” It is when we attempt to hold on to them, to solve our problems and trials on our own, when we fall further into despair. For without God, we can do nothing. Oh, what peace we often forfeit Oh, what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer (LSB 770) Yet through His Son and His Means of Grace, we find relief and rescue.
