Watch Your Step

For then you would number my steps; you would not keep watch over my sin; my transgression would be sealed up in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity.
Job 14:16-17

Watch Your Step
When someone tells us to “watch our step” they are warning us to act carefully and purposefully so as not to make a mistake or cause an offense.  Implied in this this that they will be watching as well, to make sure you comply.  This is the view we often take with God, that He is a prison warden constantly on guard to try and catch us misbehaving so as to punish us.  When all we hear and focus on is the Law this quite often is the picture we see.  Yet here we hear that Job rejoices in the fact that God would “number his steps.” In a moment of great faith Job recognize God as His salvation.  The one who watches over in a loving and caring way, not keeping watch over his sins, but keeping watch over His creation.  In this instance Job understands that God will not hold his sins against him.  He may not fully understand how that will happen, but Job none-the-less trusts in God.  For us we have this same blessed assurance, that our sins will not be counted against us for the sake of Christ, who bore those sins Himself.  We see that we are justified by the work of Christ on the cross and therefore are set free from the condemnation of the Law.  Not so that we can sin without consequence, but so that we can love without limit.  God in Christ has freed us from slavery to sin so we might be able to love Him and love our neighbor.  We are justified though Christ.
