Fear Not

Luke 1:30-34
And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

Fear Not
The angel Gabriel tells Mary, the mother of our Lord, she will have a child.  The very child who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah.  Mary is afraid, not much more than a child herself. She is newly betrothed to Joseph and knows a pregnancy at that time could warrant death. At the very least, it would bring great shame upon both her family and Joseph’s. Still, the angel tells her, “Do not be afraid.”
Wise words for us to heed as well. So often we see the chaos of the world, the chaos of our lives, and we are tempted to fear.  We may question if God is really in charge, and if so, why He would allow these things to happen. Just as Mary trusted in God’s Word for her, we too cling to His truth in Mary’s Son our Lord.  Mary had no reason to fear, for God was with her.  We too have no need to fear; Mary’s Son has come and is with us now. Christ scattered the darkness of fear and doubt.  The impossible happened. A virgin gave birth; yet even more, sinners are made clean through the blood of the Lamb.
