If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant, when they brought a complaint against me, what then shall I do when God rises up? When he makes inquiry, what shall I answer him? Did not he who made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?
Job 31:13–15

One’s standing in society often determines their worth in the eyes of others. Those who are seen at the bottom are often treated as such, while those at the top are praised and admired. We are too quick to judge one another on arbitrary criteria. Job, in his defense of himself, shows why God had called him “blameless and upright.” He recognizes what sin often clouds in our sight, that we are all deserving of respect, no matter our lot in life. As the master of many servants Job treated them fairly and equitably, for though he was above them as master and servant, there was One who was above him. He knew he answered to God, and job recognized that those people entrusted to his employ we people God had created in His own image and were worthy of such dignity. We too often forget this, seeing others as below us and not treating them with the respect a fellow child of God deserves. Job not only realized the worth of each person he interacted with, he also recognized the intrinsic value each life has from the point of conception. He knows the God who knit him together in his mother’s womb, is did the same with every person ever conceived. Our world has abandoned this notion of the sanctity of life, preferring to embrace the evil idea that life is expendable and if inconvenient that can be discarded. Whether that life be in the womb or in a home for the elderly, if it becomes bothersome, then society says to discard them. Yet God would have us act differently. We are to embrace the lives of other as gifts from God, and care and nurture them at whatever age they may be, no matter the perceived disruption we might think they will have in our lives. “For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26-28).
