Young in Years

And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said: I am young in years, and you are aged; therefore I was timid and afraid to declare my opinion to you. I said, ‘Let days speak, and many years teach wisdom.’ But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. It is not the old who are wise, nor the aged who understand what is right. Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me; let me also declare my opinion.’
Job 32:6–10

Young in Years
With age there is wisdom. This axiom is most often true. Elihu recognizes this and gives deference to those older, wiser men. In our fallen nature we too quickly discard this idea of wisdom gained from experience.  In our hubris we assume to know everything there is to know about whatever we are involved in. Humility and respect are thrown out the window. The fourth commandment of honoring your father and mother is abandoned as soon as we can walk it seems, if not before.  The devil plays on our ignorance and arrogance to convince us that we know better and in doing so pits us against those very people we should be looking to for guidance and expertise. And once we are comfortable disregarding our earthly authorities, we quickly turn our contempt towards God. We assume to know better than God. We rely on our own understanding and not on God’s.  Yet God does not discard us. He knows we are corrupted by sin and cannot by our own reason or strength come to Him. So, in His infinite wisdom and mercy He comes to us, making it possible for us to have a relationship with Him. Through His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, God has reconciled us to Himself.  No matter our age we all fall short of the glory of God, yet through the blood of His Son we are redeemed.
