No Escape

Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.
Job 33:10–11

No Escape
When one’s feet are put into stocks, they are chained together to prevent escape.  If you were to try and run, you would trip and fall.  We are bound with chains on our feet.  Elihu accuses Job of claiming God put them on him. We know the truth.  Those chains were formed by sin. Our original sin as well as our actual sins.  We add more restrictive and weighty links with every new sin. There is no escape, we trip and fall and struggle against the chains of sin.  Yet in one act of love those chains were destroyed, as if they were made of paper.  For on the cross those chains were placed on Jesus. They were nailed to that Roman torture devise and were destroyed.  Christ took them on for us because we are unable to escape from them.  His death unlocked the chains, and we walk free in His light.  And in Holy Absolution and forgiveness the chains we would place back upon ourselves are loosed.  Because of the love of God manifest in Christ we are able to freely love God and our neighbor. For at the foot of the cross we hold tight to the freedom won for us in the blood of our Savior.
