An Incurable Wound
For Job has said, I am in the right, and God has taken away my right; in spite of my right I am counted a liar; my wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.
Job 34:5–6

An Incurable Wound
We have all been wounded. Whether it be a physical, mental, or spiritual wound, we have all suffered from them. Yet no matter how much therapy or rehabilitation we do, no matter how much counseling we go through, there is one wound which we can never heal on our own. That is the wound sin inflicts upon us. It physically ravages our bodies and degrades us to the point of death. Our minds are corrupted by thoughts of hate and anger, immorality and idolatry. Our spirits are continually attacked by sin in an attempt to destroy the soul. The wounds inflicted are incurable and fatal when left untreated. And there is but one treatment, Christ Jesus. In Him there is healing. In Him death is defeated, and spirits are liberated from the deadly effects of the disease of sin. And He has done it all for us by taking the full brunt of this incurable disease. He wrapped Himself in our sins, taking them upon Himself, and in doing so condemned Himself to the fate of every sinner, death. Though Jesus was without sin, the effect was the same. So now, today, Christ bears the wounds of our sins on His body. His hands, feet, and side bearing the incurable wounds of the fall. Yet in doing so, death was defeated by death. Sin was overcome by Christ’s atonement and have been cured! Yes, we still fill the effects of sin in our lives but now in Christ we have the cure of the soul. In His Word and Sacraments, we are covered in His life saving balm. For God has told us so, “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:4-5).
