On God’s Behalf

And Elihu continued, and said: Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I have yet something to say on God’s behalf. I will get my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
Job 36:1–3

On God’s Behalf
Elihu is young and impulsive, sure of himself beyond a doubt.  He believes that Job has wrongly accused God of treating him badly.  He therefore sets out to prove Job wrong.  To do this he will speak for God.  We often do this in our own lives.  We assume our opinions are the opinions of God. We ascribe our attitudes to God and in doing so we too often forget that God has already spoken for Himself.  He has given us His clear Word in the holy Scriptures. He has spoken the truth in what He has said.  And today He calls us to speak His Word to all people.  God speaks to us through His Word and Sacraments. He speaks His Law to us which convicts us of our sins. He speaks His Gospel to us which shows us our Savior.  In His Sacraments His forgiveness won for us on the cross by Christ is delivered to us. On God’s behalf our pastors speak God’s Word of forgiveness to us. They deliver this same forgiveness at the font and altar. God’s Word of life, salvation, and forgiveness is given every time confession is spoken and absolution delivered. On God’s own behalf, He has reconciled us to Himself, doing what we could never do. In Christ Jesus God has spoken.
