Wrong Turn

Take care; do not turn to iniquity, for this you have chosen rather than affliction. Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? Who has prescribed for him his way, or who can say, ‘You have done wrong’?
Job 36:21–23

Wrong Turn
We face many decisions in this life. Some are not as important, what shirt will I wear today? What flavor of ice cream should I buy? Others have much more profound consequences, Will I accept the proposal of marriage? Should I authorize the DNR for my loved one?  Yet even as important or unimportant as these choices are, there are even more consequential decisions we make on a daily basis.  Do I give in to the temptation presented to me, or do I turn from it? The world says it’s okay, but the Bible says it’s not, what do I do?  Sadly, far too often we make the wrong choice, we turn headlong into sin and embrace the world, the devil, and our own flesh.  We choose the wide road to Perdition because affliction lies along the other path (Psalm 34:19). Time and again we take the wrong turn in life’s journey for the sake of ease and comfort, to avoid having to take an unpopular stand in the eyes of the world.  Too quickly we shrink in the face of opposition.  That is why we can praise and thank God for taking the decision of following Him out of our hands.  If our faith was a decision we made, a choice we had to decide upon, we would never make the right decision.  Thankfully though Christ tells us, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you” (John 15:16).  Christ has taken our salvation out of our hands and accomplished what we never could. Through the Means of Grace, the Holy Spirit has led us to a life of faith and sustains us in that life.  “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
