Scattering Winds

Then the beasts go into their lairs, and remain in their dens. From its chamber comes the whirlwind, and cold from the scattering winds. By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast. He loads the thick cloud with moisture; the clouds scatter his lightning.
Job 37:8–11

Scattering Winds

As the cold north winds blow in, a change takes place. Animals who have been eating all season attempting to fatten up look for a warm place to hibernate for the winter.  Migratory birds begin to fly south in search of warmer climates. The trees drop their leaves, and the fields go dormant.  The winds have scattered God’s creatures.  We, too, are affected by this.  Entire towns in the southern United States are overrun by “snowbirds” escaping the coming cold.  Yet not all is abandoned.  Rabbits’ fur changes to blend in with the snow, salt trucks are tuned up and ready for what’s to come, and eager skiers flock to the mountains for the season's first snow.  God’s infinite wisdom brings the changing of the seasons, and we are reminded of His great power and love.  His majesty is undeniable when we look to His creation, and in it, we see glimpses of His love.  Yet more than the scattering winds were needed to tell us who He is. Therefore, He sent His Holy Spirit to blow across the plains of history and inspire the writers of His holy Word so that today in faith, we can hold the truth of our God in our hands. “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). He reveals Himself throughout the pages of Holy Writ, which all point to Christ Jesus. We are given the knowledge of salvation and are led by His Spirit to plant the seeds of faith in every place we are brought. We proclaim God’s Word to the world, knowing that “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:10-11).
