Where Were You?

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Job 38:4–7

Where Were You?
We hear from God’s Word, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Before that, there was nothing that existed but God.  God created all with His words and without anyone’s help.  His understanding and knowledge are beyond our comprehension. We are in no position to question God’s decisions, yet we do so constantly as if we have insight He is missing regarding how He orders and conducts His creation.  So the question, “Where were you?” posed by God helps Job and us remember that God does not need advice. We are the ones who need God and what He has to offer.  In His infinite wisdom and power, God created all things for us. And when we destroyed His creation and our relationship with Him, it was God who restored it without our help.  By sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for us, we were reconciled to the Father, and our broken relationship was mended.  And though we may not have been there for the creation of all things, because of God’s love for us, we will be there for the new heaven and new earth (Revelation 21:1) as Christ fulfills His promise to come again in glory.
