Green Pastures

He scorns the tumult of the city; he hears not the shouts of the driver. He ranges the mountains as his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.
Job 39:7–8

Green Pastures
Job is reminded here in these verses of the greatness of God as He created all of the different animals to inhabit His creation. The wild donkey had no need for the hectic pace of the city, he knows not the sting of the driver’s whip nor the confinement of a pen.  They roamed the mountains and plains and God provided for them in abundance. God knows what they need to survive, and He provides it for them. Just as He provides what we need in our daily lives. Not only does He provide for our physical well-being as we pray in the 4th Petition of the Lord’s Prayer, but He also, and most importantly, provides for our spiritual well-being. As David sings in Psalm 23, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake” (Psalm 23:1–3). Our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, leads us to the place where we can find rest and comfort. He leads us to God’s Word which lets us know we were once lost sheep but now are found. We lie down in the green pastures of His truth, washed in the still waters of our Baptism, as we listen to our Shepherd’s voice of forgiveness, and we want for nothing. This is the truth of what Christ crucified for us means.
