Be Holy

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:13–16

Be Holy
“Be holy.” These two words either sound easy or impossible depending upon whom you speak to. For many it would seem impossible to be holy, after all, we constantly sin and act in selfish ways towards others; we are simply not good enough to be holy. For others, they see these words as an affirmation of their pious living believing they are in fact living a holy life through their good works and deeds. Both views miss the mark. We cannot be holy on account of our own good deeds yet as Christians we have the blessed assurance that when we stand before the Lord on Judgment Day, we will be found to be holy and upright. How can this be? As we are told, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” We are at the same time saint and sinner. We are made holy through the waters of Baptism and kept holy on account of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross as the Holy Spirit sustains us in the one true faith. Our works do not make us holy, but they do show the work of the Holy Spirit within us, as we love God by keeping His Commands and loving our neighbor. We are holy because our God is holy and He has forgiven us on account of the Lamb of God whose blood washes us and makes us clean, pure, and holy.
