One Day
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
2 Peter 3:8–10

One Day
We are an impatient lot, us humans. We don’t like to wait. We want what we want, and we want it now. This has always been the case. Peter reminds his fellow believers, and us, that our waiting now is not on account of any negligence or apathy on God’s part. He has not forgotten His promise to return. He waits because there is still work to be done. People still need to hear the Gospel truth of Christ crucified for them. And so we wait, not in impatience with a sense of tedium, but with urgency and evangelism. Let the time we are given be used to speak the truth in love to all those whom God places in our lives. Let the time we have be filled with sharing the love and joy of Christ Jesus. Speak the Law to the unrepentant and the Gospel to the convicted. Tell the Good News, invite others to hear God’s promise preached from the pulpit, and invite them to receive life and forgiveness at the altar and font. For one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day to the Lord, and He has given you this day.
