The True Light
Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

The True Light
No new commandment is given to you. Love your neighbor. It was given in days of old, but you and I couldn’t do it. No one can keep the law and all have fallen short of the glory of God. But this One, Jesus Christ, kept the law for you perfectly and because he first loved us, we too can now love our God and our neighbor. We may sin against one another, but in forgiveness, we restore one another. That is walking in the light of Jesus. Refusing to forgive and refusing to love is walking in the darkness. Let us walk in the light of Jesus and forgive one another. It's an old commandment made new: love one another. Now that Jesus has loved us, we can in turn love our brother. Thanks be to God that he has given us this great gift. Thanks be to Jesus Christ who showers us with the light of his atoning work.
