Abide in Us
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Abide in Us
We have received a skewed understanding of love from the world. Even the pop music of generations gone by has sung about love as an emotion, even a secondhand one at that. We get a completely different understanding of love from the Bible. Jesus shows love not with chocolates and roses, but with his innocent suffering and death and by his precious blood. Instead of being an emotion, for Jesus, love is an action. The fruit of the Christian life is one of sacrifice and denial toward neighbor. It’s only possible because of the great sacrifice that God has given for us. The Christian lives in the Word of God and with fellow Christians. The Christian is refreshed by the gifts of the Spirit and by the consolation of the believers. The Christian confesses Jesus as the Lord and Savior and in this we know that God dwells in our midst. We have known the love that God has for us, and we are lavished in it. We rejoice in his good gifts of grace and mercy.
