The Coming Peace

And the word of the Lord of hosts came, saying, 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath. 3 Thus says the Lord: I have returned to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts, the holy mountain. 4 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of great age. 5 And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets. 6 Thus says the Lord of hosts: If it is marvelous in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, should it also be marvelous in my sight, declares the Lord of hosts? 7 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will save my people from the east country and from the west country, 8 and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness.” Zechariah 8:1-8

It is with great joy that the Lord works faith in your heart. He knows that our sinful nature is fighting him the whole way. He knows that the world and the devil are tempting you and enticing you away from his Word and gifts, but our God is zealous for you. His desire is to see you gathered in his holy city and to dwell there with you. He wants to be your God and you to be his people. It is through the work of his Son, Jesus Christ, that he accomplishes your salvation. By emptying his throne and treasury and even pouring out his own blood, he suffers all, is humiliated, and dies for you. Death tried to keep him down. The world tried to lock him in the grave. The chief priests set a mark and sealed the tomb, but none of it could keep him dead. He triumphed over all and in so doing destroyed death forever. Now, he has made you his people by that blood. Now, he is your God. Now, we look forward to the children playing and the old persons sitting in the streets. He lives and we live with him. You are his delight. Thanks be to God.
