Israel Laments

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11 On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land shall mourn, each family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves. Zechariah 12:10–14.

Israel Laments

There is only One who could rescue us from the peril we have found ourselves in. There is only One whom we have pierced. That One is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The Lord pours out on the house of David a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy. It is our sin that has caused him to be pierced. It is our total rebellion against our God that has caused his death. It is our death that he dies. It is his life that we will live. We mourn over our sin, but we rejoice also. The Lord has become our salvation. He has delivered us from the wrath of the Father. This is the long-expected Son of David. This is the long-expected Seed of the woman that comes to crush the head of the serpent. Indeed, the mourning was great in Jerusalem. The House of David laments. The people of God lament their rejection of their Good Shepherd. Your God goes to extremes to save you. He gives up all things to have you. The Lord of Life sets aside his crown, gets up from his throne and becomes part of the creation to have you and me as his people forever.
