Blessed Rather
As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” --Luke 11:27-28
Blessed Rather
The Angel Gabriel announces that the Lord Jesus will be born of Mary’s flesh. We call it the incarnation. God takes on our flesh and blood because he wants to redeem that flesh and blood. He wants to redeem you. Mary is important. All generations will call her blessed. She says so herself in Luke, chapter one. But Jesus comes that he might put his Word into you. He sends preachers to proclaim it. He sends that Word into your ears and down into your heart so that you would have faith. It is all the work of the Holy Spirit. He changes us from death to life and from darkness into light. He does it all by the power of Baptism. In Baptism, the righteousness of Jesus is given to us freely. We are dead to our sins. Jesus dies and our sins die with him. We are alive to God. Jesus rises from the dead and gives us victory. Thus, you are counted blessed, like Jesus. You have his blood covering your sins. You have his righteousness wrapping you. You have a place in heaven where you will dwell forever. Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it. In the name of +Jesus. Amen.
