The Light in You

“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”  Luke 11:33-36

The Light in You

We used to sing “This Little Gospel Light of Mine” in Sunday school when I was a child. My favorite part was, “hide it under a bushel…oh NO! I’m going to let it shine!” No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. The purpose of the lamp is to fend off the darkness. Its light is for the whole room. Likewise, when your eye is healthy, it lets all the light into your body. The eye is like a gatekeeper for your body. Jesus wants only light in your body. He wants no darkness at all. To walk as a child of the light is to have an eye cleaning. The Holy Spirit does this by the Gospel that he proclaims. This Word preached and Sacraments given are transformative. They bring you the very light of heaven. They fill the inside of you with this light. This light from heaven is Jesus. He died on the cross and in the darkest day ever triumphed over darkness and restored life and light to his people, to you and me. Thanks be to God!
