The Wedding Feast

7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:7-11

The Wedding Feast

The human heart wants to be honored. The sinful flesh wants to sit in the best seat. The religious establishment liked to pray in public and have the best seats at the synagogue in order to be seen by others. But the problem is that our sinful behavior is self-serving. Our sinful behavior does not help our neighbor. So, Jesus would have you sit in the lowest place. Be imitators of Jesus and strip yourself of all that you have for your neighbors and your friends. In the one that exalts himself will be humbled by the Lord. The one who humbles himself will be exalted by the Lord. Just like the great song of the mother of our Lord describes in Luke 1, our God is the God of great reversals. In Jesus, he takes your sin from you and gives you righteousness. In Jesus, he takes your eternal punishment from you and gives you eternal life in heaven. In Jesus, he takes your poverty from you and gives you the riches of heaven. He rises victorious over the cross and over death and lives with you to enjoy you as his own. Thanks be to God for Jesus’ work for us.
