The Law and the Prophets

14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. 15 And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
16 “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it. 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.  Luke 16:14-17

The Law and the Prophets

The things of the human heart are an abomination in the sight of the Lord. Our sin rules our lives, and we disregard the intervention of our God. We exalt ourselves and our works and the gods that we have created. We are lovers of money like the Pharisees. We put our trust in princes, bank accounts, jobs, and our positions. We lord it over our neighbors and our families. But the Law of the Lord is good and wise. It sets God’s will before our eyes. It shows the way of righteousness and dooms us to death when we transgress. Its greatest function is to condemn us as sinners and show us that we cannot save ourselves. Thanks be to God that the good news of the Kingdom has been preached to each of us. The blood of Jesus’ cross cleanses us from our transgression and makes us whole again. Jesus fulfills the Law. He keeps it completely and fully. He does that for you and me. Then he suffers our punishment for us so that we don’t have to. It may be easier for heaven and earth to pass away, but Jesus dies for you and rises again that he might have you forever. That is a delight in the heart of the Lord.
