Prayer

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.

Prayer
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. It can be very difficult when we are apart from those we love. We long to be with them. Paul feels this absence when he writes his letter. But even though he is sad at their separation, that sadness is overjoyed by the fact that they have been brought to faith by the Holy Spirit. Paul focuses on the fact that they have faith, not on their strength or on their works. Christians everywhere knew of their brothers and sisters in Rome, and this was a cause for celebration. Paul had repeatedly prayed for the opportunity to visit the Roman Christians and was praying for the Romans themselves, and he testifies to this fact as God, who hears prayer, is Paul’s witness. Even though Paul was not bodily present with them, nevertheless he served them in prayer. This helps remind us that God also hears our prayers. He hears the prayers of all His people. We should constantly be in prayer for those we love, for ourselves, and for all people. Just as Jesus has taught us, we can go directly to our Father as dear children speak to their dear Father, knowing that He hears and answers those prayers. May our Lord Jesus continue to strengthen us and lead us in faithful lives of prayer.
