Foolish Hearts

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Romans 1:21-23

Foolish Hearts
We are to fear love and trust in God above all things, according to the explanation of the First Commandment. But as Paul points out in these verses, we do not do this. Neither honor nor thanks are offered to God when we choose to follow our sinful desires and turn from God’s will. We exchange His glory for cheap replacements that quickly rust and break down—dumb and mute idols of our own making. We look to creation and worship it instead of the Creator. Yet, in God’s infinite love and compassion, He does not leave us in our rebellious state. Instead, He sent His Son to take on our flesh, to know our lives in every way except without sin, so that we would have a God that sympathizes with us. And in faith, our eyes are opened to the truth of who Jesus is, our foolish and darkened hearts are enlightened with the truth of the cross. The glory of the immortal God is given to us to know in a personal way through the Word and Sacraments. The false gods of our own making crumble in the presence of the true God, and we are given life as Christ exchanged His glory for our flesh so that we might have His righteousness. Thanks be to God that we have been made wise to this truth.
