No Righteous One

What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Romans 3:9-18

No Righteous One

We really do think higher of ourselves than we should. Yes, we pay lip service to the fact that we are sinners, but deep down, we think we are not that bad and that there is some good in us. That we can contribute to our salvation. After all, we convince ourselves we haven’t broken all of the Laws, right? I mean, God will give us a pass on those minor slip-ups, won’t He?  While we are tempted to think that obedience to the Law can save us, Paul shows the Law’s diagnosis: we are sinners incapable of saving ourselves. Only when we see this are we prepared for the Good News of what Christ has done for us. Only then do we understand that Christ has done it all for us, our sins are wiped away through His blood, from His cross. May we never forget that we are sinners, so we never forget to seek forgiveness in the Lamb. May our heavenly Father help us see Jesus and trust in Him alone.
