A Type of the One to Come

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

A Type of the One to Come

There was no sin in God’s perfect creation until the fall of Adam. And with his fall, death becomes the consequence of sin. And like a contagion sin has spread. Parents have transmitted mortality to their children since Adam took it upon Himself to disobey God’s command. And since then, we have all sinned. Adam’s fall brought sin to all humanity. We inherited his guilt and the desire to sin. Though the Torah had not yet been revealed, Adam had heard and broken God’s Law, and death reigned. We are mortal and under death’s power. And though Adam cast his fallen image upon all of us, he was a type of the One to come. Christ came into the brokenness of our world, assuming our flesh, and undid what Adam had done. Christ took our sins and carried them to the cross. There, they died with our Savior. There death was defeated. In Christ, the victory is ours, and the image of God is being restored in each believer as the Holy Spirit gives and strengthens your faith. In Baptism, you are a new creation, forgiven and loved.
