Inheritance
So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Romans 8:12-17

Inheritance
We have probably all daydreamed about receiving a large inheritance from a rich relative. The unexpected windfall could be used in so many ways to make life easier, to pay off bills, or to take a vacation. But for most of us, this will always be a daydream. Yet there is an inheritance that we have all received, one that we wish we could decline. Our first father, Adam, has given our original sin to all his descendants. With this inheritance, we are made enemies of God, turned against Him from conception. But as horrible as this inheritance is, there is a far better gift we have received. The Holy Spirit leads us to trust confidently that we are heirs, not only of Adam’s wretched gift but also privileged to call God “our Father” and to receive eternal glory at the end of present suffering. The path to glory, however, is not an easy street, for it entails a daily rejection of personal sins, a daily drowning of the old Adam in us. When God’s judgment frightens us, the Spirit assures us that God loves us in Christ. Our Lord, by His Spirit, comforts us when we are afraid. He leads us to see Him as our dear Father and to see ourselves as His dear children.
