But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved

We are sinners, God-haters, spiritually dead enemies of God. And even when we admit this, we still want to leave some room for good in us. We still want to believe that we had something to do with our salvation. But if that is the case, then Paul speaks lies here, for grace is a one-way street. Grace is not me cooperating with God to accomplish something. It is God alone doing everything. It is the unearned gift given to us. It is the water combined with the Word that God gives to make us His children. Grace is the love of God, which resides only in His heart. Through ordinary means of water, bread, and wine, combined with God’s Word, we are given the gift earned for us by Christ on the cross. Thanks be to God that He has done all for us. For in God, there is no room for doubt.
