We are Comforted

10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. 12 So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. 13 Therefore we are comforted.
2 Co 7:10–13

We are Comforted

We feel the pain of our sin. Our conscience won't let us off the hook. Our faith takes ahold of that terror and points us to the cross of Jesus. We repent because of the work of the Law and the Gospel in our lives. We have godly grief, but it only lingers for a moment as the Gospel grants resurrection and life. We are comforted by the love that flows forth from that faith. The Christian heart reaches out and grabs Jesus and our neighbor. It binds up strong that which is grafted into the branch. We have comfort because Jesus' work is our work and we have been delivered from death. We have been made one with him and will live forever with him.
