The Glory of God
38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”

The Glory of God
Standing before the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus commands the stone to be taken away. Martha hesitates, decay and death already claim her brother. Yet Jesus reminds her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” That glory is not simply in the miracle of Lazarus walking out alive, but in what it foreshadows: the cross. There, the true glory of God is revealed, Christ crucified, conquering sin and death by His own death. The tomb of Lazarus points to the empty tomb of Jesus, where corruption gives way to incorruption, despair to hope. In Baptism, we are joined to that death and resurrection. When the stench of sin and death surrounds us, Christ still commands the stone to be moved and calls us forth by name. His Word of life shatters the grave’s silence. The glory of God shines through the cross.
