The King Who Comes to Die
12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
John 12:12-15

The King Who Comes to Die
The crowds waved palm branches and shouted, “Hosanna!” as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a humble donkey. They expected a king of power, one who would overthrow Rome and restore Israel’s glory. But Jesus came not to conquer by force, but to save through suffering. His kingdom is not of this world, it is a kingdom of grace, established by the cross. The donkey carried not a warrior, but the Lamb of God who bears the world’s sin. His throne would be a cross, His crown of thorns, His victory a dying breath that crushed the serpent’s head. The people cried, “Save us now!” and He did, though not as they imagined. Our King still comes in humility, through His Word and Sacraments, bringing peace the world cannot give. His triumph remains the same: forgiveness, life, and salvation through the cross.
