While the Earth Remains

"Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease."
GENESIS 8:21-22

While the Earth Remains
The simple meaning is that in this passage God promises Noah that the earth will be restored; that it will be possible again to sow the fields; that the destruction which the flood had brought about will come to an end; that the seasons will occur with customary regularity; and that in due order harvest will follow sowing, winter will follow summer, cold will follow heat. . . . The statement of the text, "while the earth remains," is not without purpose; for it implies that at some time the days of the earth will come to an end and other days—of heaven—will follow. As long as the days of the earth endure, the earth will endure, and the changes of the seasons will endure. But when these days of the earth come to an end, everything will come to an end, and there will follow days of heaven, that is, eternal days, which will be Sabbath after Sabbath, when we shall not be engaged in physical labors for our subsistence; for we shall be like the angels of God (Mark 12:25). Our life will be to know God, to delight in the wisdom of God, and to enjoy the presence of God. We attain this life through faith in Christ. May the eternal Father, through the merit of His Son and our Deliverer, Jesus Christ, mercifully preserve us in it through the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen.
