God Sent Me
Behold the wonderful doctor and illustrious theologian and interpreter of the words and deeds of God! "You have betrayed and sold me," [Joseph] says. "This is altogether certain. But listen now, and learn God's plan, what you have done and what you have not done. You have destroyed and killed me. This cannot be denied. But this destruction and killing of yours, what has it been in the eyes of God? For in the same work God's plan is one thing, and your plan is something else. God has used your plan and your exceedingly evil intention for life, not only mine, which would be a matter small enough, but universally. The Lord has sent me to bring to life, for life. You have not sent me, but the Lord has sent me through you." . . . Therefore this passage should be especially noted with regard to the counsel of God, which is also proclaimed in Isaiah 55:8-9: "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts." . . . Therefore let us learn not to follow our own thoughts or to measure and understand by our own counsels our misfortunes or works and experiences. . .. Before the world Christ is killed, condemned, and descends into hell. But before God this is the salvation of the whole world from the beginning all the way to the end.
